As far as Apple rumors go, this one’s pretty insignificant, but here it is: according to iPod Observer, they’ve attained leaked images of the new 16GB iPhone, and while there isn’t anything new spec-wise to report, it will apparently come with a matte black shell as an option.

There’s plenty of reasons not to accept this as gospel, but it’s not wholly unlikely: Apple has retained the same look for both iterations of the iPhone so far, with the exception of the back casing. It makes sense for them to change it again to differentiate the 3G’s successor from the past two models while retaining the iPhone’s iconic front design.

The E100 was a little weak for the iriver name, but at $59 for 8GB of PMP deliciousness, it’s hard to resist. Walmart is clearing out the black iteration for $40 off the original price, and while we’d hate to presume and be wrong, we’re hoping this is just a sign that iriver’s gonna go all out at CES ’09. The newest computer manufacturer to jump into the smartphone business? Dell.

According to a leak on their website, Dell has two smartphones called the Pharos Traveller lined up for release sometime later this year. The 127 will be a traditional QWERTY phone, where as the 117 will go the way of the iPhone with a touchscreen interface. Both will feature 7.2Mbps HSDPA 3G, GPS and — gah! — Windows Mobile 6.1, with a talktime of four hours and 200 hours of standby. Both also have a 2MP camera and a 0.3MP front camera for video calls. No carrier or price yet.

It’s pretty hard to find this exciting. The phones are ugly, the OS is coughing up dust, the name is joyless and the manufacturer is Dell.
